Money Line

Unlike many other sports, in hockey betting on the money line is probably the most popular option.  The reason for this is because you may not always see a ton of games that have one team cover the -1.5 spread that typically comes along with it.  All you have to do when betting on the money line is get the team who is going to win the game correct.  It probably sounds easier than it is obviously, and I’d absolutely recommend taking the time to do the research on any game that you want to bet, because there are quite a few different angles that you can use to find good bets in hockey.

Total Bets

The total betting in hockey is exactly like other sports, and it is going to move around depending on the betting action and also how well both teams have done both offensively and defensively in recent games.  You are going to see a projected number of total goals on the game between the two teams, and you are going to either bet on the over or the under for that game.  Hockey teams can definitely get streaky with their offensive play, so be sure to look into how well offenses have done recently before jumping all over a low total that looks strange.

Goal Line Betting

Goal line betting is just like run line betting in baseball.  There is going to be a line set that is usually -1.5 for the favorite, and the odds will pay out better for the favorite than betting them just to win straight.  The reason for this is because if you take this bet, then the favorite is going to have win by two goals or more.  If you feel that the game could be very close throughout though and aren’t sure who will win, betting on the underdog 1.5 goals could be a great bet, because even if they lose by one goal you are still going to win your bet.  Goal line betting isn’t as popular as money line betting, but it can be a great option in many different situations.

Money Line Period Bets

So if you aren’t sure that one team is going to win the game outright, but think that they’ll get out to a hot start and jump to a quick lead against their opponent, you may want to bet on a money line period bet.  This means that you can bet on who will win each period of a hockey game.  So if you think that the underdog will start out the game hot, then betting on them to win the first period could be an excellent option.  You can bet on any of the three periods and the odds are going to vary by each period and also will probably move around depending on who is being bet to win the game itself.

Futures Betting

The best futures betting options are going to relate to things like who you think is going to win the Stanley Cup in the NHL, and also who will win the Eastern and Western Conference Championships.  The odds will vary throughout the season, but if you like an underdog in these bets then getting it down before the season could be the best time to put your bet down before everyone catches on to them!  You can also bet on the Rookie of the Year race and things like the Most Valuable Player award, both of which you may want to wait a bit into the season before betting on.

Prop Bets

Prop betting on hockey is a popular option that players may actually overlook without realizing it.  You can find betting options like which team will score the first goal in a hockey game, or which specific player is going to score first.  You can also bet on when the first goal of the game will be scored (what period), and additional bets like that.  The odds on these bets are going to vary by each game.  When betting on something like the player to score the first goal of the game, riding the hot hand is a safe angle, but it’s a tough bet to make, sort of like betting on who will score the first touchdown in an NFL game.
